You Follow Me

“Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, ‘but Lord, what about this man?'”
“Jesus said to him, ‘If I will that he remain til I come, what is that to you? You follow me’.” John 21:21-22

I have echoed Peter’s question many a time.

Thank You, Lord, for Your answer that moves me in the right direction when I get stuck focusing on someone else and what they are doing. And here’s a simple poem . . .

How To Walk

Show us, Lord, how to walk
and closely follow You
while we must be beside
those that hurt us too.

We know that You will make a way
for us to be true
to the One Whom we adore
and whoever You send us to.

On Monday I’ll be starting through the Book of Joshua . . .Old Testament time again! Thank you so much for helping me do this devotion/poem thing!

Be Believing

“Then He said to Thomas, ‘Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here , and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing’.” John 20:27

The world around us grows more and more distrusting and cynical.

Thank You, Jesus, for giving us every reason to believe You and trust You. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Unless We See

Thomas wasn’t there
when You first came
he hadn’t seen for himself
the truth the others claimed.

You didn’t rebuke him
but made sure he knew as well
that You were indeed alive –
Good News to spread and tell.

Undefiled

“Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.” John 18:28

They were not defiled for taking the Lamb to be sacrificed.

Lord, I desire to embrace the role each one had in Your crucifixion . . .and how it had to be that way. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Embrace It All

How can I blame someone else
for You crucified

when it was the Father’s will
and already prophesied

better to embrace it all
as You did that day

choosing to die and save the world
You gave Your life away.

Remember That I Told You

“But these things I have told you, that when the time comes you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.” John 16:4

We recently did a little house sitting. Although I go there every week to clean, there were some other things she needed to tell me before she went away.

Thank You Lord, for telling us what we need to know for today and for each of our tomorrows. And here’s a simple poem . . .

When The Time Comes

While You were with them
they hung on Your every word

and when You had to go
You’d remind them what they heard

just as Your Holy Spirit
testifies of the truth

that nothing lies ahead for us
that doesn’t go through You.

He Prunes

“I am the true vine and My Father is the vinedresser.
Every branch in me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” John 15:1-2

When my husband pruned the neighbors apple tree late last fall, I was more concerned about him than the tree. The tree now shows no evidence or scarring from what was done.

Father, I look forward to You pruning me and trust You to take away what isn’t healthy or helpful in my life right now, while concentrating and tightening what is working, keeping me close to the Vine. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Closer To The Root

As the apple tree is pruned
in late fall and early winter
so during my time of rest
You take away what hinders
then as the season comes again
in which to bear much fruit
I won’t miss what’s gone , but rejoice
in being closer to the Root.

Even The Spirit Of Truth

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever,
even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.” John 14:16-18

We are constantly accosted by lies.

Father, please so fill us with the Holy Spirit that the lies of the enemy fall off us and do not stick. And here’s a simple poem . . .

No Lie

He has promised us the Helper
even the Spirit of truth

to abide in us forever
to show us what to do

He will not abandon us
nor leave us all alone

for He’s the great Comforter
who makes our hearts His home.

Into His Hands

“And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,
rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.” John 13:2-4

I’m amazed at how focused Jesus remained on the tasks at hand, given the intensity of the situation.

Oh Lord, may I go out comforted and confident today, doing what You have given me to do for this time, knowing in the end I will be with You for eternity. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Purposed

By God and of God
and from God, He came
To us and for us
because of us, He came
laying His robe
His home, His life aside
picking up our sins, our shame
back to God now, He flies.

Chosing Judases

“Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, annointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.” John 12:3
“Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said,” John 12:4
“‘Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?'” John 12:5
“This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.” John 12:6

Jesus knew all of this about Judas, and more, when He chose him to be among the twelve.

Thank You, Jesus, for choosing me and drawing me close to You even though You knew all I had done, was currently doing and would yet do. And here’s a simple poem . . .

What He Knew

How can You know
everything about me

even the hidden flaws
and motives I don’t see

yet love me so strong
and so completely

that none of it matters
but You transforming me.

Sometimes Love Waits

“This sickness is not unto death, but for the Glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” John 11:4
“Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” John 11:5
“So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was.” John 11:6

Sometimes love waits.

Thank You, Lord, for teaching me about a love that submits to what is greater than it. And here’s a simple poem . . .

But For The Glory of God

Jesus didn’t run right to them
the moment that they called
but waited knowing God
had a better plan for all
that though they would grieve
and misunderstand
God’s glory would wipe it away
when Lazarus breathed again.
