Remember That I Told You

“But these things I have told you, that when the time comes you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.” John 16:4

We recently did a little house sitting. Although I go there every week to clean, there were some other things she needed to tell me before she went away.

Thank You Lord, for telling us what we need to know for today and for each of our tomorrows. And here’s a simple poem . . .

When The Time Comes

While You were with them
they hung on Your every word

and when You had to go
You’d remind them what they heard

just as Your Holy Spirit
testifies of the truth

that nothing lies ahead of us
that doesn’t go through You.

Into His Hands

“And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,
rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.” John 13:2-4

I’m amazed at how focused Jesus remained on the tasks at hand, given the intensity of the situation.

Oh Lord, may I go out comforted and confident today, doing what You have given me to do for this time, knowing in the end I will be with You for eternity. And here’s a simple poem . . .

By God and of God
and from God, He came
To us and for us
because of us, He came
laying His robe
His home, His life aside
picking up our sins, our shame
back to God now, He flies.

Chosing Judases

“Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, annointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.” John 12:3
“Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said,” John 12:4
“‘Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?'” John 12:5
“This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.” John 12:6

Jesus knew all of this about Judas, and more, when He chose him to be among the twelve.

Thank You, Jesus, for choosing me and drawing me close to You even though You knew all I had done, was currently doing and would yet do. And here’s a simple poem . . .

What He Knew

How can You know
everything about me

even the hidden flaws
and motives I don’t see

yet love me so strong
and so completely

that none of it matters
but You transforming me.

Sometimes Love Waits

“This sickness is not unto death, but for the Glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” John 11:4
“Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” John 11:5
“So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was.” John 11:6

Sometimes love waits.

Thank You, Lord, for teaching me about a love that submits to what is greater than it. And here’s a simple poem . . .

But For The Glory of God

Jesus didn’t run right to them
the moment that they called
but waited knowing God
had a better plan for all
that though they would grieve
and misunderstand
God’s glory would wipe it away
when Lazarus breathed again.

I Am The Door

“Most assuredly I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” John 10:1
“But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.” John 10:2
“Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.” John 10:7

Family, friends and neighbors come to our door, to knock and enter in.

Thank You, Jesus, for coming to us with everything that is good, true and light. And here’s a simple poem . . .

The Shepherd and His Sheep

I am the Good Shepherd
I love My sheep
and tenderly care
for those I keep.

Should anyone climb in
from another way
My sheep won’t listen
to what they say.

From God

“If this man were not from God, He could do nothing” John 9:33

I can’t do anything either, without God.

Thank You, Lord, for giving us work to do with You. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Sent For This

Blind from birth
but now he sees

the people murmur
how can this be

as Jesus does
all He’s sent to do

with another now believing
the Son of God is true.

Dropping Rocks

“So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, ‘He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first’.” John 8:7
“And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.” John 8:8
“Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience went out one by one beginning with the oldest even to the last.” John 8:9

I am so encouraged that there was not one there who thought they were without sin . . .who stayed to throw a stone.

Jesus, thank You that we can’t deny our sin in Your presence. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Truth Thrown

Rock drops
mouth opens
can’t believe
what I see

my own sin
where I’d seen others
plainly staring
back at me.

Dear readers . . .I goofed. Somehow I forgot to do a devotion from John chapter 7, as this is from chapter 8. Will work on that with Him for tomorrow! 🙂

Lying There

“When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, ‘Do you want to be made well’?” John 5:6

I’ve been here at this question for several days. In tears.

Jesus, thank You for asking us the questions no one else knows to ask. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Pool Side

By my pool
of Bethesda
the waters stir
I don’t jump in.
Am I waiting
to be carried
or to be healed
by only Him?

Owning It

“And many more believed because of His own word.” John 4:41
“Then they said to the woman, ‘Now we believe, not because of what you said for we have heard for ourselves and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world’.” John 4:42

We’ve seen giraffes on t.v. and know they are tall. Seeing them close up at the zoo makes that fact more personally real.

Lord, we thank You for the testimony of others and for giving us each a testimony of our own. And here’s a simple poem . . .

We hear and believe
by their testimony
and our faith
takes wing.
Then Jesus comes
to us personally
and our faith
now sings.

Immeasurable Spirit

“For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the spirit by measure.” John 3:34

When I cook, I have to measure the ingredients. When I add gas, oil or coolant to the car, I have to measure too.

Lord, we thank You that You don’t give Your Spirit out in teaspoons or 1/4 cups, but let it flow without measure. And here’s a simple poem . . .

All Out

God pours Himself out
without limit or measure
filling us with
His Spirit today
so we can walk forth
sure of His power
for He doesn’t skimp
or fill us half way.
