Very Heavy

“Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go back to its own place, so that it does not kill us and our people.
For there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.” 1 Samuel 5:11

The Philistines could not carry the weight of the ark of the Lord any longer.

Lord, we thank You that the hand that is heavy against your enemies, is also careful to gently lift us. And here is a simple poem . . .

His Own Place

Let the ark and His presence
return to its place

among the hearts of His people
those who seek His face

for His splendor and His glory
cannot be denied

nor shared with any idol
He alone is magnified.

Here I Am

“And it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place, and when his eyes had begun to grow dim that he could not see,
and before the lamp of God went out, in the tabernacle of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down to sleep,
that the Lord called Samuel. And he answered, ‘Here I am.'” 1 Samuel 3:2-4

When our youngest falls asleep on the couch, she wakes often and calls for me.

Oh Lord, may I stay close enough to hear You and respond. And here’s a simple poem . . .

He’s Calling

You are calling out our names
may we be listening

You have words for us to speak
may our mouths be willing

may we trust You even more
respond quickly and obey

not allowing time to come between
diluting what You say.

I Can Smile

“I smile at my enemies
because I rejoice in Your salvation.” 1 Samuel 2:1

It was good to see our youngest daughter smile again after a recent time of seizures.

Lord, we desire to walk, talk, pray and sing like the saved. And here’s a simple poem . . .

All Bow Down

When the enemy attacks
I can forget who I am
one of the saved, the redeemed
blood bought by Him.

Thanks for reminding me
I’m more than a conqueror in You
and though the enemy stomps around
he must bow down too.

Desperate Giving

“Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.” 1 Samuel 1:11

Hannah kept her promise and gave back the son she so desperately wanted.

Oh Lord, I desperately want to put back into Your hand everything You have given me. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Returned

Asking for a gift
I can give to You

something of use
that has meaning and value

like Hannah gave up Samuel
and You, a Son too

let me think first of the Kingdom
and surrender all I do.

Open Doors and Adversaries

“But I will tarry in Ephesus until Pentecost.
For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.” 1 Corinthians 16:8-9

Beginning to see how open doors and adversaries go hand-in-hand.

Lord, please show us how to stand and not be afraid of the attacks and the tactics that come against us this day. And here is a simple poem . . .

Woe Is Not Me

Beginning to see more and more
just what’s going on
and I’m not about to crumble
into some sad sob song.

Woe, woe is not me
no, I’m not giving in
ready to fight today
standing strong in Him.

“I Am What I Am”

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.” 1 Corinthians 15:10

I am one of those in whom the grace of God has had to work more abundantly.

Oh Lord, I pray Your grace has its way in me more and more. And here’s a simple poem . . .

The Grace Miracle

I am what I am
by the grace of Thee
and what I once was
is disappearing
though I don’t deserve it
You keep blessing me
pouring out Your love
working miraculously.

Tongue Utterings

“For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for battle?” 1 Corinthians 14:8
“So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.” 1 Corinthians 14:9

When my youngest gets upset, she makes up words or puts words together in ways that don’t make sense. I have to wait for her to calm down in order to understand her.

Lord, please help me share You today with others in a way they understand. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Words That Edify

Whatever is on my mind
I can speak into the air

and though it feels good to me
there’s no use for it there

so I’ll submit to You, Lord
and ask for the words on my tongue

to be ones that edify
Your work being done.

Love Suffers

“Love suffers long and is kind.” 1 Corinthians 13:4

Love . . .suffers.

Thank You, Lord, for showing me what love is and what it does. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Love Shows

The ad shows diamonds
beaches, beds
muscles, curves, skin
long lingering looks
excitement
while

a rejected cornerstone
Golgotha, nails
stripped, torn flesh, blood
hanging long hours
shows
love.

Schism Chasms

“But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it,
that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.” 1 Corinthians 12:24-25

The word schism reminds me of chasm, of falling deep and not being able to get back out.

Lord, help us to remember that there should be no divisions. . .no cracks that could cause someone to fall. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Composed

When the body
has schisms
it’s divided
by wide gaps
but when it’s members
care for each other
no one risks falling
through the cracks.

When I Come

“But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come.” 1 Corinthians 11:34

J of Jerusalem, who shares here most Sundays, told me something that stuck with me. When she first accepted Jesus, she wondered about the difference in what congregations would tell her she should do. Then Jesus told her one of the churches may be correct, but their hearts weren’t. . . that He’d come back and set all things right.

Oh Lord, let us not concentrate on who is right, but on Who is all righteousness and truth. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Who’s Right

I’m coming to set
all things in order

there will be no mistaking
about who is right

you won’t be consumed
by thoughts of each other

but overtaken
by Eternal Light.
