Hearing and Learning

“Gather the people together. . . that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the Lord your God and carefully observe all the words of this law . . .” Deuteronomy 31:12

Moses’ days as a go between for God and His people were almost at an end. They would have to listen and learn to fear the Lord their God themselves.

O Father, thank You for making Your word available to me daily, lest I forget and lose my fear and awe of You. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Healthy Fear

So much to read
so little time

yet I think God has
something else in mind

for me to focus on
His word while I’m here

so I can live out my days
with a healthy awe and fear.

He Will Gather

“If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you.” Deuteronomy 30:4

Modern day Israel is seeing this happen, as those of Jewish descent continue to make aliyah, returning to their promised home land. (The featured guest writer, J of Jerusalem, made aliyah 16 years ago from Alaska. How’s that for a “farthest parts”?)

Oh Lord, we thank You that even those who seem to be the furthest from You, You will gather and bring close. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Bringing You Back

There is no where you can go
where I won’t seek you

no place you can be driven
from which I won’t draw you back

to gather you with compassion
into the land I promised

for you to take possession
of all that you have lacked.

God To Us

“All of you stand today before the Lord your God. . .that you may enter into covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath, which the Lord your God makes with you today, that He may establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you . . .” Deuteronomy 29:10,12,13

Here in Deuteronomy, Moses is doing his best to make sure the people understand who they are to God and who He is to them.

O Lord, may nothing ever keep me from letting You be God in every way to me. And here’s a simple poem . . .

His Wonders

Come
enter in with Me
step forward
into all that can be
and let Me be
God to you
living out the wonders
only I can create
and do
through you.

Over Taken

“And all these blessings shall come upon you and over take you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God.” Deuteronomy 28:2

The people had been overtaken by the Egyptians, by fear, by oppression, and by doubt. To be overtaken by blessings? That was something to be glad about!

Oh Lord, we thank You for the blessings You lavish upon us. But may we be overtaken more and more by the desire to hear and obey Your voice. And here is a simple poem . . .

His Voice In Our Ear

God is talking
and we’re listening
wanting to know
what He’s all about.
We are asking
God is answering
oh so close
no need to shout.

Written Very Plainly

“And you shall write very plainly on the stones all the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 27:8

God didn’t go for fine print or obscure text.

Father, thank You for writing Your law of love so plainly on our hearts through Jesus Christ Your Son. And here’s a simple poem . . .

All The Word

The law and the prophets were written
and Jesus fulfilled them all

like the handwriting appearing
upon the proverbial wall

God didn’t keep the Word hidden
but sent Him throughout the land

traveling in all the region
still seen in the hearts of man.

Every Good Thing

“So you shall rejoice in every good thing which the Lord your God has given to you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you.” Deuteronomy 26:11

The people were taught to practice thankfulness as a way of life.

Lord, I chose to see the good in each day over the bad , and rejoice. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Seeing The Good

We come down sick
can’t leave the house for days
yet, we’re saving money on gas
and food this way. . .
each time something bad happens
I know God is doing good
because He has promised
and said that He would.

The Right Thing To Do

“If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the widow of the dead man shall not be married to a stranger outside the family; her husband’s brother shall go into her, take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.
And it shall be that the first born son which she bears will succeed to the name of his dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel.” Deuteronomy 25:5-6

What I noticed in this, and the other laws God set forth, is His desire for His people to do the right thing. And the right thing to do wasn’t usually the easiest thing.

Oh Lord, we desire to do what is right in Your sight above what is right in ours. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Doing Right In His Sight

It might be rather humbling
require a letting go
maybe a difficult forgiveness
but He wants you to know
He sees you in this moment
even though it’s hard
making the right choices
because He’s in your heart.

God’s Economy

“When you reap your harvest in your field, and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.” Deuteronomy 24:19
“When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow.” Deuteronomy 24:20

None of the above makes good business sense.

Oh Lord, please school me deep in the economy of You. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Leave It

Could I leave a sheaf
without going back

or forget a few olives
and be okay with that?

Oh may I trust You
to keep and cover me

whether I be blindly blessing
or gathering for free.

God Walking

“For the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you.” Deuteronomy 23:14

God walks among His people Israel because He wants to. He wants to be with them. He loves them.

Jesus, thank You for walking among us, living within us . . .for wanting to do that, for loving us that much. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Amidst Us

God looks at us
and sees You

making us holy
through and through

delivering us
from the control of sin

defeating the enemy
again and again.

Fifty Shekel Wives

“. . .then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.” Deuteronomy 22:29

This doesn’t sound exactly like the fairy tale weddings we’ve come to expect.

Lord, thank You for the many lessons on humility that you teach us through marriage. And here’s simple poem . . .

Together For Him

I hear of someone getting married
and wish them the best

many years of joy
of love and tenderness

knowing God has something
even more profound in mind

providing yet another way
for us to be refined.
