Stay With Me

“Stay with me, do not fear. For he who seeks my life seeks your life, but with me you shall be safe.”  1 Samuel 22:23

David was speaking to Abiathar after Saul had his family killed.  But, it could have been Jesus speaking to us.

Lord, thank You for the eternal safety that only You can provide. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Eternal Safety

Stay with Me
and do not fear

I will protect
and draw you near

for the one who hates Me
hates you too

but he does not reign
indeed, I do.

What Have You On Hand?

“Now therefore, what have you on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever can be found.”  1 Samuel 21:3

The world is in a constant state of emergency.

Lord, please move in us that they will see You as their only Hope and Provider.  And here is a simple poem . . .

Provision

What do you have on hand
for those who are hungry
that are forced to flee
all they have known?
I will provide you with
exactly what they need now
making from your prayers
their shelter and their home.

The Lord Be Between

“And as for the matter which you and I have spoken of, indeed the Lord be between you and me forever.”  1 Samuel 20:23 NKJV

Normally, we wouldn’t want anything to come between our relationships.

Lord, thank You for being the glue that holds us together. And here’s a simple poem . . .

God Glue

Different opinions
seek to pull us apart

words, actions, attitudes
stab in the heart

but You are between us
holding both our hands

keeping us together
just as Love commands.

The Spirit of God

“So he went there to Naioth in Ramah.  Then the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah.”  1 Samuel 19:23

“And he also stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night.”  1 Samuel 19: 24

Saul was on a mission to get David.  He sent messengers three times to him and then finally went himself. Each time the Spirit of God came upon them and they prophesied instead.

Lord, sometimes we go off on missions of our own.  Please send Your Spirit upon us so we can only do and say what You want us to.  And here’s a simple poem . . .

Come Upon Us

We start out on life’s path
knowing what we need to do

be successful, make money
and a name for ourselves too

then Your Spirit comes upon us
and strips us of untruths

leaving us lying in wait wanting
only to do what You want us to.

Behaving Wisely

“And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.” 1 Samuel 18:14
“Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him.” 1 Samuel 18:15
“But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.” 1 Samuel 18:16

There is a wisdom in being among people without a hidden agenda.

Lord, we desire to stay humble and real for You today, wherever we are, whoever we are with. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Nothing Hidden

They saw his going out
and his coming in
how he always behaved
wisely among them

and they quickly fell in love
with this young shepherd man
who would himself seek after God
and be chosen to rule the land.

Misconstrued Motives

“Then David spoke to the men . . .’For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God’?” 1 Samuel 17:26
“Now Eliab his oldest bother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, ‘Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle’.” 1 Samuel 17:28
“And David said, ‘What have I done now? Is there not a cause’?” 1 Samuel 17:29

Our motives may be misconstrued.

Lord, when the integrity of our action is doubted, please help us to focus and do what You’ve asked us to. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Who Is This?

His brothers thought they knew
the real reasons David came

to be prideful and brag
to seek out some fame

but when Goliath fell
all saw the Lord with him

so they could face the Philistines
claim His victory and win.

He Knows Where To Look

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart’.” 1 Samuel 16:7

Samuel had listened to God and obeyed Him from a very early age and yet still he thought Jesse’s oldest son, Eliab, was the one God would anoint.

Lord, we thank You that You see and know what we do not. Please purify and transform our hearts for You. And here’s a simple poem . . .

The Brightest Times

I look on the outside
You see within

I judge by appearance
You weigh the hearts of men

and know beyond all measure
what each one can do

arranging for them the times
of shining their brightest for You.

In Mourning

“And Samuel went no more to see Saul until the day of his death. Nevertheless, Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord regretted He had made Saul King over Israel.” 1 Samuel 15:25

How often do I mourn for those who are disobedient?

Lord, we desire to not just write someone off who has turned away from You, but to grieve for them in prayer. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Grieving for the Strayed

Sure of what they’re doing
there are those who have strayed

feeling they are right
but they have turned away

this is not a time for anger
or self-righteous pride

but a time for mourning
staying at God’s side.

* Note *
The next chapter starts out . . .”Then the Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel’?” 1 Samuel 16:1
hmmm . . .egg on face. ” 🙂

Unrestrained

” . . .it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few.” 1 Samuel 14:6

Jonathon and his armor bearer crossed over to the garrison of the Philistines. Those two were a few that God worked through to save many.

Lord, we rejoice today over the fact that nothing restrains You from carrying out Your purpose and Your plan. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Saving Many

You decided long ago
what You were going to do

and nothing has stopped
You from following through

on saving many
by the sacrifice of One

unrestrained redeeming
through the blood of Your Son.
