Can You?

source – sinussister.com

“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
That an abundance of water may cover you?
Can you send out lightnings, that they may go,
And say to you, ‘Here we are!’ ?”  Job 38:34-35

As God questions Job, I feel myself shrinking.

Lord, thank You for keeping us humble, in a place where we can see all You can do.  And here’s a simple poem . . .

What I Can Do

I can’t order the heavens
or command the seas

nor satisfy the lions
no, none of these

but You can do all things
and all things wonderfully

and I can praise You
and worship eternally.

  1. Oh Wow, Sis Deb–this is Wonderful, very humbling indeed, and so beautiful. God bless you as you worship Him in your work today–may He give you abundant strength, joy and peace for the tasks. much love, sis Caddo Delight

  2. Beautiful words Deb! They are truly inspiring!
“Jesus replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God”.” (Luke 18:27).

  3. Job 38 & 39 … imagine sitting under 12 months of expositional sermons from those two Chapters, Debbie. What a grand way of getting delivered from the bondages and lies of man-made climate change!! Glad you highlighted this. Bless you.

  4. I love how you put it that you feel yourself shrinking – He must become more and we must become less! Always good to be reminded of how big and powerful He is! Love and blessings xx

  5. On Wednesday nights I have been teaching “Route 66,” a study of the 66 books of the Bible. Last night we were in Job. This is one of the most majestic sections in all of Scripture. I can only imagine God speaking and Job and is friends shrinking more and more. Thanks for the focus today Deb and thanks for the poignant poem.

  6. Thank you for this beautiful post that magnifies the Lord.

    Love,
    Theresa

  7. Oh that we all might feel lower and lower as we see His greatness and the need to trust and serve Him with all our hearts! As Godly a man as Job was, even he got his eyes off the Lord and centered on his many problems. The Lord certainly suceeded in getting His attention! Lord bless.

  8. this is a beautiful poem you have created Debbie!!!!

  10. This simple poem and the humility of your precious heart blessed me again today Deb! I read it to my husband today before he set off to teach his classes. We were both blessed!

  11. Good thoughts – Job is a great reminder that God is so much bigger than us and that we can never fully understand his ways. But we do know he loves and cares for us.

  12. Sister Debbie we are in-tune this morning I have to say. You talked about Job and I gave an analogy about Job in my posting. Praise the Lord, thank you Jesus.

  13. Twice today I have been reminded about how little I am and how that is a good thing because it puts God firmly in the driver’s seat. I am exciting about all that God is doing right now but I am constantly reminded that in His work I am really only a ride -along. So blessed to be that!

  14. There is such a great balance in the Bible. On the one hand, all of us would be in awe and unable to speak if God asked us the same questions He asked Job. Maybe at best, we’d answer like Ezekiel and say, “O Lord God, You know.”

But on the other hand, Jesus said we could do all the things that He did and greater because He went to the Father. We can walk on water, stop storms, heal the sick, raise the dead, etc. and more. In fact, Paul said we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Phil. 4:13).

The answer lies in your poem:

“…but You can do all things…”

And the good news is that He lives in us.

    Great poem, Deb.

  15. Wonderfully put again Deb. How blessed you are to receive such words from the Lord – and how blessed WE are to receive them from you.

This reminds me “He must increase and I must decrease”. There is a sense in which this is impossible. He CANNOT increase because He is already the Ultimate and I cannot decrease because I am already nothing. On the other hand, of course, it is a wonderful truth. In the exercise of my life, I must decrease my input, allowing Him to REALLY be in control in every way; allowing Him to exercise His rightful place as LORD.

    He alone is worthy!

  16. Beginning in Chapter 38, Job meets a big, BIG God.

These last few chapters in Job where God speaks while Job is speechless always reminds me of the story Malcolm Smith told about himself. It was a dry time for Smith and he desperately sought the Lord and kept crying out, “Lord, why?” on many issues.

After days of repeating his “why” mantra, Smith heard the Lord say, “Hippopotamus.”

Smith was stunned and replied, “Lord, hippopotamus?”

Then, Smith heard the Lord say to his heart, “Little Malcolm, if you do not understand why I created the hippopotamus, then how will you possibly understand the answers to the questions you are asking?”

God is a big, BIG God and He reveals what He wants to reveal us. Anything more than that and we would be overwhelmed.

Like the emphasis of your poem, there are things we can do and things only God can do. We need to stay in our place and worship Him.

  17. Love you and thank you Sis Caddo Delight! Praying your day was blessed too, as you praise Him for all He can do! God bless you!

  35. How refreshing – I am NOT God, and certainly don’t have His responsibilities!! How freeing to remember Who I am not, and Whose I am!

  36. He is so good at knowing what we need . .. and that we need to be humble. God bless you and your worshipful heart! You help me draw near to Him with your posts!

  45. Dearest Deb, I am beyond shrunken….

“Lord, thank You for keeping us humble, in a place where we can see all You can do. ”
That hot seat can get pretty hard at times, but I am certain if He places me there, then ” He is working all things together for my good.”

God bless you much. May you never run out of ‘simple’ ways to share His love with us.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Blessings,
    ann
