How Will He Come To Us?

“What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love with a spirit of gentleness?” 1 Corinthians 2:21

I want love and gentleness, but may need the rod.

Lord, thank You for always knowing what I need. May I not get to the point where a rod is needed, but stay where the Truth spoken in love brings me to my knees. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Gentleness and a Rod

My stomach tightens
at how wrong I’ve been

heart sickness follows
and I know it’s of Him

as His Spirit wields both
gentleness and a rod

for correction comes with
the powerful love of God.

  1. very nice words.
I will try hard not to be a Corinthian today .
    Glad I don’t have a Cordoba .
(do you remember that Corinthian leather ? πŸ™‚ )

  2. “…heart sickness follows
    and I know it’s of Him…”

That’s a good description of how I feel when the Holy Spirit is convicting me of my sin, sort of all yucky inside. Because of my many past experiences, I now know to run toward the light so the darkness in my heart will be revealed.

  3. I, too, would rather have the gentleness, but too often I don’t listen until I feel the rod.

  4. Thanks, Deb

“Lord, thank You for always knowing what I need. May I not get to the point where a rod is needed, but stay where the Truth spoken in love brings me to my knees.”

I often don’t see the danger until I feel the heat of the flame. Seriously praying this today.

  5. Oh the things you can get me to remember! πŸ™‚
God bless you, hero, as He comes to you today!

  6. That is it for me too, Larry . . .all yucky inside. And it’s not the flu.
God bless you as you run toward the light each day!

  7. I know what you mean, Ted. It can be easy for me to overlook the gentleness if I’m not being sensitive to Him . . .wanting my own way. God bless you as you listen to His gentle voice today!

  8. God bless you, Ann full of Jesus grace. Somehow I imagine you respond to His gentleness and that is the warmth you feel . . .not the heat of the flame. πŸ™‚ love and prayers for you as you go today!

  9. Hi! Been thinking lately how God chastens those He loves … when we are His we know that any discomfort in our lives comes from Him — for we are protected from evil.

I’m thankful for that chastening because it pulls me off the path of my destructive ways and onto His paths of true life, peace and freedom.

  10. You encourage me with being thankful for the chastening that pulls you onto His path! It is a good thing! πŸ™‚
God bless you as you think of Him and listen to His voice!

  11. My Uncle Tom calls it “being taken to the wood shed”. I try to stay away from the wood shed where God is concerned. Understanding it is an option helps me to keep my respect of the God who is my Father and who loves me enough to do what is necessary to keep me on the path of righteousness. Thanks!

  12. I love the wood shed analogy. πŸ™‚ And I am with you, where I don’t want to knowingly push things that far. May that respect, fear and love of Him keep us ready to respond to gentleness and love. God bless you as you stay on His path. πŸ˜‰

  13. OK… rod. It’s been a tough week.

However, “heart sickness follows and I know it’s of Him” is a good dose of reality. Why do I always have to learn the hard way?

    Nice, thoughtful post tonight. Hugs… : )

  14. I don’t know why, but those lessons stick with us, don’t they? I’m so sorry you’ve had a tough one. There seems to be a lot of that going on and I’m going to forward you an e-mail letter from Jim, okay? God bless you and keep you close in His tender care.
    love and prayers.

  15. Discipline is proof of love. My loving heavenly Father disciplines me because He loves me so much and only desires the very, very best for me. If He didn’t love me He would allow me to go my own way.

As one who had no discipline as a child, I appreciate being disciplined (no, I didn’t say I enjoy it: but I certainly appreciate it and recognise it as a loving action)

  16. “Discipline is proof of love.” Praying that I keep that in mind! πŸ™‚
God bless you, dear Angela, much loved child of God!
