Good Wise

“For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil.” Romans 16:19

I have seen the evil planned for me not come about as I continued to do what God asked me to do.

Lord, we ask for the wisdom to know what is truly good in Your eyes and how to go about it today. Please deliver us from evil and the temptation to be wise concerning it. And here’s a simple poem . . .

What Is Good

There is a wisdom
in knowing
what is good
and then setting
ourselves to it
without planning evil
for the evil
that threatens.

  1. Evil is always a tough topic for me. Many of my prayer partners routinely pray the prayer of protection and believe that we are really fighting evil all the time. I’m not closed to that thought but had always thought of it more manifesting itself in greed and dishonesty rather than an entity of its own.

  2. Deb,
The simplicity of your posts baffle me because it takes me far more to communicate something so relevant.
How have I missed this verse in Romans? It is true that knowing good from evil is big and I’ve never thought of it in the way Paul instructs us. Evil is all around us and often consumes us but being simple and avoiding it surely is the best way to deal with it.
My pastor always said to us men that when confronted with what causes us evil, just RUN! Now it makes more sense why.

  3. Deb said, “The simplicity of your posts baffle me…”

I agree with her, but I also know, that it’s hard work to make things sound simple. So, keep it!

  4. Miss you…you are always in my prayers… 🙂

  5. Thanks Deb, Much around me seems evil these days but I am constantly reminded that my God is the God who works all things together for good! Thanks for being my reminder today! 🙂

  6. You state the complicated so clearly. What a gift!

I have been thinking lately that we/I emphasize evil too much. Not that we are to ignore it, but put it in its place. It is real but we/I are not to make it important. What is important is our Godand His goodness.

Thanks for getting me “wondering” again.

  7. Evil is tough for me too, Tammy. I am simple and like to look for the good, try to find joy in my situations. So I don’t pray against it as much as some may. I do think there is constant spiritual warfare going on. I understand what you are saying about it manifesting itself in greed and dishonesty. Maybe realizing that evil comes from satan will help us in seeing how it is more present and with us? God bless you and yours, and how He leads you to pray!

  8. I love your Pastor’s advice! 🙂 And thank you, Vineet, for coming by to comment!
Just thinking out loud here . . .that Paul wasn’t wanting us to be naive about evil, but not so consumed by it that we end up thinking more of evil than we do about God.
God bless you and your family and ministry!

  9. Larry . . .I have to have things simple! ha! My brain just can’t grasp the complicated. So God, in His infinite kindness, helps me to simplify. phew! So glad I don’t have to write like the rest of you! ha!
God bless you and the good He puts you to today!

  10. Oh my lovely Elizabeth! Thank you for being here! love and prayers to you too! Hope to catch up . . .I’ve fallen behind and I can’t catch up . . .argh!
God bless you and the special heart for others He gives you!

  11. Love that, Pastor J! It’s all good with God. 🙂
God bless you and keep you today!

  12. Oh, you put what I was wanting to say to words better than I! Thank you! That was what I was thinking too, Patricia, that we give evil too much attention. Like feeding it, in a way. And when we are so busy with it, then we aren’t thinking of God.
God bless you and the good thoughts of God you are thinking today!

  13. In my anger and bitterness I planned evil for the evils. What stopped me was the thought, “Why should I become the very evil that I hate?” Sometimes it’s hard to leave it to Lord but it becomes easier when I remember what my own business should be — and it’s not judging others. When I am busy taking care of the business of others then I neglect my own — to honor God’s creations.

Just sharing my simple thoughts. And if my thoughts aren’t right I pray that God will eventually show me the wise ones 🙂

  14. Thanks Deb,

I like the idea of trusting Him to lead me instead of “ planning evil for the evil that threatens.”

I think that is a good way to look at this. Thank you so much for this wonderful poem and prayer. Greatly appreciated!!

  15. I LOVE your thoughts, sweet spoon! He has given you so much wisdom. I’m so blessed that you share it with us! I know I’ve done that before too. There is no peace in it, is there? No joy. yuck.
God bless you and your thoughts of Him!
    love you!

  16. God bless you, Ann full of Jesus grace and good! Now young lady, I forbid you to comment on this blog while you are doing so much else, okay? 🙂 love and prayers!

  17. >> “I have seen the evil planned for me not come about’

With those words I thought of numerous times – times that non-believers call “coincidences” – when I have “just missed” evil. God is still on the throne and He is in control. He goes before us, planning our steps and leading us in His way.

    What an amazing God!

  18. Yes, Angela! You know what I mean. I didn’t know what else to do, but what I was suppose to do, even though I knew evil was working hard to take me out. Those times now, in looking at, make me say with you . . .”what an amazing God!”
God bless you as He keeps you from evil today!

  19. Deb, I love this observation: “I have seen the evil planned for me not come about as I continued to do what God asked me to do.” I have seen that, too. I have even see the evil planned for me by another become a blessing as I trusted in Him for protection, wisdom, and guidance. What an awesome God we serve! Peace, Linda

  20. Oh I love that . .. trusting Him when seeing that evil! There is a blessing in that, for sure.
God bless you as you serve our awesome God!

  21. These truley were words of wisdom…we tendtoleanto our own understanding. Thank you for this reminder.

  22. God bless you, dear woman of the Word, and you lean into Him today! Praying to be right there with you, leaning too!
