Cheerful To Testify

“But the following night the Lord stood by him and said, ‘Be of good cheer, Paul; for as you have testified for me in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness at Rome’.” Acts 23:11

I love how God told Paul to be of good cheer in what didn’t appear to be a cheerful situation.

Thank You, Lord, for encouraging us as we labor within Your will. Please send a word of encouragement to those who need it today. And here’s a simple poem . . .

No Despairing

Be of good cheer
and do not fear
for the Lord
is right beside us.

We are still
within His will
and the Spirit’s
here to guide us.

  1. Amen, this has touched my heart, thank you for sharing.

    The Poet

  2. God bless you, Poet, and your heart for Him! 🙂 You have encouraged me today!

  3. Thank you, Deb

“Thank You, Lord, for encouraging us as we labor within Your will. Please send a word of encouragement to those who need it today”
    I so pray.

I do believe cheering others is your ministry. Be encouraged as you encourage!

    Blessings much,

  4. God bless you, Ann full of Jesus grace, as you bring encouragement and grace everywhere you go! 🙂 Extending grace like you do is VERY encouraging. Thank you!

  5. .. ‘Be of good cheer…’

Not once does the Bible report that an angel or the Lord says to Paul or others, “Hey! You seem to have everything under control. Your faith is strong. Fear is not a problem for you. So go for it!”

A visitation happens because we desperately need one.

  6. Thank you Larry for showing me that side of it! 🙂 Fear does happen even in strong believers (even in Paul) and that is why He must come and tell us not to so often. So thankful that He is patient with me/us!
God bless you as He visits you today and brings you what you need to hear!

  7. Deb, I have never noticed that encouragement of Jesus’ to Paul! That little ‘be of good cheer’ is fascinating. I guess it is to me because I still am not completely rid of my impression that God is kind, distant, and somewhat disinterested in my little doings, even though I ‘know’ otherwise. My father was that way, and I clearly know the linkage comes from that as well as from another incident in my life. Thank you for pointing this out. this feels like a door is opening up just a bit-a door to a new understanding and place of closer relating to Jesus, hopefully. Wow!

I so wish I could ‘see’ how Jesus related to those around him. The bible gives us a glimpse but not a full view. How vitally important are our interactions with children, especially fathers, for it so impacts their understandings of God and His dealings with and love for them, at a foundational level. And it seems to take much time and effort to undo a bad foundation.

  8. What a wonderful insight–thank you. This is going to be something for me to dig into–maybe a future post at Patricia Wonders?

  9. Angel A, I understand so much what you are saying, constantly see the affects of how fathers (and mothers) relate, or fail to, on the children. Then here comes Jesus saying, “be of good cheer”. Even when earthly parents are unable to represent His love and relationship to their children (maybe due to their parents being unable to do the same thing) He will still make His love known to us. . . .will love us with an ever lasting love.
I, too am seeing a door open, and I thank you soooo much for saying that! For helping me to see it for what it is. This good cheer in uncheerful situations speaks to me of my own situations which look bleak. But are they? Or are they yet another opportunity to testify for Jesus? 🙂
God bless you big time and I pray with you for Him to reveal just how He related to those around Him and to those (and you!) around Him today.
love you Angel and your utter honesty before God and man. You encourage me to do likewise!

  10. Hi Debbie,

I thought of the Scripture that tells us not to get weary in well doing. Sometimes, not only do we become weary in well doing, but we also become discouraged. Thank you again, for such a relevant word for a time such as this!

Thank you for the encouragement! It is needed! God bless you!

  11. You make me smile and I love your wonders! 🙂 You pull inspiration from everywhere, because He’s there.
God bless you and encourage you today!

  12. You’re so right, Paulette. It can be wearying and discouraging and downright distasteful. Until He lifts us up. 🙂 So thankful for that! And so thankful for you. You have that lifting gift from Him! 🙂
God bless you and lift you up today!

  13. This really is an encouraging verse and post. Thank you so much for sharing it. 🙂

  14. “… as we labor within your will.”

I’m just not in the mood right now. I’m tired of laboring, need to be just a normal girl for a couple days.

Sometimes I just don’t know how Paul did it. : l

  15. “The Lord is right beside us”
“The Spirit’s here to guide us”

So very true! And yet sometimes we are tempted to ignore the fact and take everything upon ourselves. Shame! One day soon we will worship Him and follow Him without any distractions. Meanwhile 1 Corinthians 15:58 is a good motto: “Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord”

  16. Thank you so much, Angela, for adding 1 Corinthians 15:58! Looking forward to that time of worshiping and following without any distractions. God bless you as He stays beside you all the way! Praying for your hubby too.

  17. I know what you mean . . .laboring is hard work! You are doing it though, dear Linda, just like Paul did . . .by the power of Jesus in you. 🙂 Praying for you some down time with Jesus soon.
love you and all you are for Him!

  18. God bless you, wonderful woman of the word, as you spread His good cheer! love you!

  19. Deb, More great advice straight from scripture! Be of good cheer no matter the circumstances. Be thankful in all circumstances because nothing can take away the love of God, which is the most important thing in our lives. Even when we don’t understand why things happen, we know that God is in control and has only our best interests in mind. We had a guest preacher this past Sunday who talked about trusting God no matter what because He is God. One line he said really resonated with me: “What if God is trying to humble you? It happened a lot in the Bible.” So in trying circumstances, be of good cheer because God knows what He is doing. Peace, Linda

  20. Oh boy Linda . . .that one resonates with me too. Thank you for sharing that! I know at times I have felt like I am under attack. And it may be true, but regardless is that wonderful knowing that He is working in it all.
God bless you as you let God be God in your life!

  21. I love that poem, Deb. Thankyou. It’s just lovely for me today.
It’s great that you’re reflecting on Acts. I’ve been reading and meditating on Acts too lately, as it happens, such good timing. So I’ve been especially loving hearing what has jumped out at you in Acts. So much good stuff. 🙂

  22. I love that you have been in Acts too! 🙂 You are right that there is sooo much in there . . .all good. Sharon . . .do you have a blog? I keep trying to go to it, but get a page that says its no longer available? Just wanted to come say “hi” there too, as you bless me with your encouragement. 🙂
God bless you as you meditate on His word today. . .cheerfully!
