The Authority and The Glory

“Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.” Luke 4:5
“And the devil said to Him, ‘All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish’.” Luke 4:6

The devil offering authority and glory to THE Authority and Glory? I blink hard.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, that even when You had gone through fasting and temptation for 40 days, You never forgot Who You were and all You had. And here’s a simple poem . . .

When the trials rage
and persecution comes
and I lose my senses
and come undone
may I yet remember
it’s by Jesus I’m claimed
and I have all I need
as I call on His name.

  1. Deb, It seems like the devil deceived even himself! Or else he’s stupid enough to think he could deceive Jesus.

I love this poem! It reminded me of the song Undone by MercyMe.

    No apologies
For who I’m meant to be
The only thing that matters is
    I am free
    When I am overwhelmed
    Holding pieces of my heart
    When I feel my world
    Start to fall apart

    To the cross I run
    Holding high my chains undone
    Now I am finally free
Free to be what I’ve become

Thank you for sharing these wonderful words of comfort and wisdom. Peace, Linda

  2. Deb, I am just catching up here after being gone for a few days. This is such a refuge poem!!! And today, I was accused of not believing the bible…(not sure why or by whom…all second hand rumor stuff)…have recently been accused of not being Christian (because I left a very abusive church)…I am so grateful for the reminder of your poem, and the one Linda shared above. Thank you!!!

Also loved your poem of two days ago about being blessed…I am cleaning house today and will be gathering of my excess to give away, too.

  3. Thanks Deb,

May we never forget who we are and Whose we are – despite what we have to go through.

God bless you, Delightful Deb. Thanks for another bite of truth 🙂

    @ Anonumuss : – I like the term ‘refuge poem’ 🙂

@ Linda :- Nice song! The visual at this point gives much reason to praise!

    “To the cross I run
    Holding high my chains undone
    Now I am finally free
Free to be what I’ve become

    Blessings all,

  4. Thank you so much Linda, for the blessing of the Mercy Me song. Their music has such powerful lyrics. 🙂
God bless you as you give Him all the glory and authority over your life!

  5. Deb,
I give God praise for you.The time you take to write blogs and the passion he gives you to do it,allow the words to come with such power and authority.Stay blessed and be blessed.

I thank God everyday because one of the things Jesus accomplished when he died and rose again was to break the power of the enemy. When he defeated the enemy on the cross,he gave us authority over him.He said,”I give you the authority…over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you”(luke 10:19) How sweet is that? The devil tries to feed us lies and give us false hope but thank God we know who believe in and he’s able to do all we can ever ask for and more then we can imagine.

Lord,I thank you for suffering and dying on the cross for me,and for rising again to defeat death and hell.My enemy is defeated because of what you have done.Thank you that you have given me all authority over him.Show me when I am not recognizing the encroachment of the enemy in my life.Teach me to use the authority you have given me to see him defeated in every area.Lord,I know that in the midst of the battle I don’t have to be fainthearted.Thank you that I will never be brought down by the enemy as long as I stand strong in you.Bless on my brothers and sisters that they may be encouraged by this post that we are victors and not victims.

  6. I was thinking about you Angel A! Glad you are back and okay . . .but so saddened to hear about those accusations. Praying that He hold you tight and lift you up, carrying you right through it all . . .closer to Him. It reminds me of when Jesus’ home town got angry with Him and were going to toss Him off the cliff, but He turned and walked out from among them and went His own way. You know Whose you are and The Way you are going.
God bless you and be your refuge and delight today!

  7. Amen, Ann-full-of-grace! Thank you for all you do to help us stay focused on Him, even when things get hard.
God bless you and your ever encouraging heart! 🙂

  8. Wow Kenisha! I have goosebumps! You are such a powerful witness of His and your prayers bless and minister in extraordinary ways! More and more I realize the battle we constantly undergo and all the lies that are thrown at us. So thankful for all Jesus has done for us and gives us to stand strong in Him. It also causes me to be more understanding and compassionate towards those who don’t know Him yet and face the same battles.
God bless you as you minister to us all in His wonderful name!

  9. A, Just wanted to say that I think the term “abusive church” ought to be an oxymoron (and I love an opportunity to use the word oxymoron). So sad that it is a reality because that is not what Jesus called His church to be. Peace and love, Linda

  10. Kenisha, The prayers you include in your comments are so beautiful and powerful! Thank you for blessing all of us who read them and can make them our own prayers. Peace, Linda

  11. As I have this day received accusations about my faith from my own family (though not the first time), I am both sad and yet grateful for friends like yourselves, whom I have never met in person, that God uses to encourage me during this most dark and alone time of my life. Linda, oxymoron is right, and I had never noticed that. I don’t presently even go to a church though I may, again, someday. Places like this are ‘church’ to me at this time. You all are more of a blessing than you can probably even imagine. (I am getting counseling for issues related to all this, but the thought of even going into a church building makes me break out into an actual cold sweat. I get dizzy and light-headed and just have to leave. I am glad Jesus isn’t confined to buildings with a 501C3 status.)

  12. Praying that God continue to heal you from the abuse, heal relationships and bring understanding to them, and bring friends, church and fellowship to you in whatever ways He desires and knows is best!
Angel, I’m not currently going to church either. Not because of your reason, but I am also so thankful and blessed for the “church” that He has given us here with one another! love and hugs from God and me today!

  13. Thank you, Deb! Hugs back!!

  14. “For the kingdoms of the world… have been delivered to me.”

I have a question. I knew that the devil took Jesus up to the mountains to tempt Him, right? But is it true that the devil does have authority over the earth? Isn’t that why there is so much demonic oppression today?

I always believed this was true, but since I mostly study alone, I could very well be wrong.

  15. That is a great question and I really looked at that too. (Notice I didn’t address it in my devotion . . .because I didn’t know!!)
So, I’m going to ask for help from other more knowledgeable readers here . . .help! ha!
I’m torn between seeing what you mean, but then also thinking of Jesus being over all, King of Heaven and earth.
Okay A, Linda, Theresa, Ann, Rea, Craig, Loren . . .anyone out there reading this, can you answer Linda’s question? We’re all ears (eyes)!

  16. I don’t have an authoritative answer but this reminds me of Job and how God allowed Satan access though it was not unlimited. He couldn’t take Job’s life. I wish I knew more about this so I am eager to read what others have to say as well.

  17. Oh . . .that is a really good point Angel A! Thank you for helping with this! 🙂 I’m eager too . . .but will try to be patient. ha! God bless you and all the knowledge and wisdom He has given you!

  18. I have read this thrice since yesterday and hesitate to comment because I feel that my words are oftentimes out of place but somebody keep me pushing back here (I actually experienced this so many times lol). I still have the same words..

    I cried for help
    and someone came
    not flying with a cape
    nor glided on the wall
    only with love for me
    so Jesus saves me.

‘All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish’.” Luke 4:6

This made me think how could the devil offer something that belongs to the Creator? I keep on creating scenarios like a guest offering to give me a chair that I own provided that I turn the water into juice. How dare…

How dare me not to offer her a juice!

  19. I loved your comment so much, Rea Sonshine, so much. I’m so glad He pushed you on back here. You have so much to offer me, to teach me. Please, please never hesitate! I need to hear from you.
Your thoughts about the devil being brash enough to think he owns what is God’s really rings true, sweet one. Now we have thoughts from both sides on this! I’m going to e-mail Theresa and I’ve asked Loren from answersfromthebook too. It’s a great discussion!
God bless you and all you are in Jesus!

  20. Let God be praised deb.Together we’re stronger. He allows you to write posts, which allows me to comment and as the word says when and two and three are gathered in his name,he’s in the midst. The goosebumps you have is the spirit moving in you.Ha! Bless God.

  21. Linda, I learnt this song as a child”each day brings new opportunities to grow in his love, becoming the ones we ought to be,like Jesus above”.I can only bless others with God has allowed me to bless them with, and if its only my prayers and comments,I’ll take the opportunity because I want to grow in him.Let God be praised.

  22. Linda, the following is from Loren, at answersfromthebook. . .

It’s no problem at all, I will gladly share my thoughts about it 🙂

In the New Testament, there are three different Greek words that are all translated as World in English. One carries the meaning of an age or eon (the word in Greek actually is aion – eon) and is used in verses like Matt. 12:32, MK. 4:19, and Luke 18:30 and is normally used to distinguish between this life on Earth and the next, eternal life to come. Most of the newer Bible translations use the word age for this term. The second word (oikoumene) refers to the “inhabited Earth” or the physical “world” itself. Finally, we have the third word for “world” which is Kosmos (we get the English Cosmos andcosmopolitan from it). It really refers to the order of things, or the “world order”. It is a political description of how governments and kingdoms are ran. When Jesus says in John 17:16 that neither we nor He is “of this world”, this is what He is talking about. In fact, all of those references to the world throughout John Chapters 14-17 are all references to the Kosmos world. The Kosmos is the sin-stained, corrupted world, it is the “powers that be” which are in rebellion against God.

It is this world over which Satan has control and it is this world that contains the “kingdoms” that he mentions to Jesus during the temptation. So, in short, yes, Satan was right when he told the Lord Jesus this. It is interesting to note our Lord’s response: He does not dispute that it is within Satan’s power to hand these things over to Him and many have suggested that, were the devil mistaken in this 1.) Our Lord would have certainly known it and probably pointed this out and, 2.) It wouldn’t have really been much of a temptation if Satan did not have the ability to follow through with his enticement.

Elsewhere, Jesus refers to the devil as the “prince of this world” (John 12:31, 14:30 — again, it is Kosmos referred to in these verses). The Apostle Paul refers to the devil as “The god of this world” (2 Cor. 4:4) and “The prince of the power of the air” (Eph. 2:2). God has given Satan a certain amount of authority and power on this Earth over the political system of the world. The kingdoms of this world are ultimately under his dominion. Old Testament passages such as Isaiah 14:12-17 and Ezekiel 28:13-19 give us a glimpse of the condition in which God originally created the devil before he fell. God has not strip Satan of all of the authority and power which He endowed him with…yet 🙂

I took the time to briefly write what I did in the first paragraph because I always feel that it is important to distinguish what it is exactly that the devil does have a reign over. I have heard some teach that Satan is ultimately in control of everything on this planet and that is simply not true. The Earth belongs to the Lord and the fulness thereof (Ps. 24:1, 1 Cor. 10:26), God owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Ps. 50:10). Any power that Satan has exists simply because God allows it (see, for example, Job 1:9-12, 2:6-7, and Rev. 13:7, 20:7). As children of God, we should always remember that: while the devil does have a certain amount of authority over things in this world, the One Who indwells us is greater than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4) and Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33)!

Hope this helped, Deb, God bless you 🙂 I wrote a post way back when I first was in Genesis that compared Eve’s temptation with the Lord Jesus (click here). You might find it interesting. Have a great day, talk to you later!

  23. Thank you Deb for this entry. I am enlightened once again and now know which world Satan holds, the Kosmos.

Made me remember Cosmopolitan and other women magazines which a Pastor mentioned that it’s not only men nowadays who are into porn and perversion but women as well and they disguise it in the form of fashion/lifestyle magazines. Temptations are indeed everywhere and sometimes we fail to detect it.

    Thanks again 🙂

  24. I’m so glad that it helped, Rea . . .it helped me too! Big thanks to Loren! 🙂

  25. I am so glad to come back and read the wonderful things said in the name of Christ on here! Wonderful words they are!

I thought about you, check out this guy who is a fellow Texan and Christian…and Writer/Editor!

I think you will be blessed!
