“. . .and this woman was a widow of about 84 years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.” Luke 2:37

When I think of serving God, I think of missionaries going to foreign countries, or someone helping in a shelter, feeding the poor . . .or those who teach Sunday school so faithfully.

Lord, thank You for widening my view of what serving You can be. And here’s a simple poem . . .

Help to Help

Lord, I can’t help
the way others do
I’m not able to be there
for them or for You
but You are a big God
with so many ways
to graciously allow me
to serve You today.

  1. Oh Deb, You serve Him so wonderfully every single day when you post your poems to glorify Him! I’m so glad He gave you this way to serve. Thank you for expanding our view of what it means to serve Him beyond being a missionary or serving in the church. Just by how we live for Him we serve Him. Peace, Linda

  2. There is a season for everything. I’m limited today too, but as we both know, caring for others is what Jesus would do. I admire your service in keeping His word before your readers each day. Awesome, Deb.

  3. Deb,

“but You are a big God
    with so many ways
    to graciously allow me
    to serve You today.”

Those are words that make me smile.

“28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” John 6:28-29

“7Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, 8I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.9I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.10I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.” Psalm 40:7-10

    “5So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 6Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:5-8

Deb, I believe there is a volume that is written of you. 🙂

You show mercy with cheerfulness! You believe both in the Lord and “on” Him. You declare His faithfulness, salvation, His loving kindness and truth to a “great congregation”. You give and give and give with a profound simplicity.

  4. Hi Debbie, you may be interested in joining Stumbleupon which you can put your blog on and make more friends with similar interests. the link is

  5. Help to help
    That’s what we need!

  6. Thank you, Deb

It’s great to know that “He allows us to serve”. He can do it without us but He allows us to serve … I’m thankful.

God bless you, Deb. You speak about those who serve …Like Linda, I’d like to add you and all the others who use the gift of writing/literature as a ministry to others.

    In His Service,

  7. You are so gracious Linda! Thank you! I think as I wrote this the other day, I wasn’t even thinking about blogging. More about just being here and taking care of Aubrey. I think of others that need help, want to help them . . .but it just doesn’t work out with Aubrey. And that’s okay. Just wish there were more of me (like clones, not more weight! ha!)to help family, friends, neighbors, strangers . . .:) God bless your servant’s heart!

  8. Thinking of your Hospice time of volunteering. What a beautiful service that is/was. I just smile thinking of those sweet people who were so extra blessed to have you caring for them. 🙂 God bless you as you keep doing as He would do!

  9. I’m smiling and crying at all of this . .. at the same time. I think you might be extra partial to me, dear woman of the word! ha! But, my, how you blessed me with these verses and your sweet words. You made my day so much better. 🙂 Feels like God smiling at me when I read your comment! God bless you as you spread the comfort of His word and truth far and wide!

  10. Thanks so much Mike, for thinking of me and letting me know about that! 🙂 God bless you as you write for Him!

  11. You mean you need help to help too? Not just me? 🙂 I keep feeling better and better as I read these comments! God bless you and help you to . . .smile a lot today!

  12. Thank you, Ann-full-of-grace, for highlighting that fact . . .that He allows us to serve. It’s a blessing and a gift to be able to. I love to help, and just don’t get to as much as I’d like to. I’ve always been like this, since I was a kid. My parents used to make my brothers go dig dandelions out of the yard. But me? I’d go out real early before everyone was awake and just do it . .. for like fun. ! Okay, maybe TMI. Might scare you guys. haha!
God bless you as you serve and love Him today!

  13. This is a lovely tribute! Your words flow and help him and us in so many ways, you might not even know!

  14. Thank you for serving, Deb … your words are a blessing to me!

  15. Thank you dear Chef E, for flowing in here and blessing me! 🙂 God bless you and yours, now and always!

  16. Thanks right back at you! You have the most beautiful gift. It reflects such a beautiful relationship with your Jesus. God bless you as you serve Him with your amazing poems!

  17. Thank you for the service that you are doing for the Lord. It is overflowing that it reached me!

  18. Debbie, Christians are the hands and face of Jesus on earth, just as Buddhists do works for the good and Jews for Adonai and Muslims in the name of the Prophet. Your humility shines in this one. Thank you for sharing this with us. Peace, Amy BL

  19. I think that I am the one being helped, by you and everyone else! You always make us think and smile and God loves how you do that! 🙂 God bless you, sweet Rea Sonshine as you overflow for Him!

  20. So nice to have you here, Amy! How’s the unpacking going?
It’s hard for me to see how taking care of my daughter is serving God at times. It just doesn’t seem like enough or like it counts.I can feel selfish for doing it . .. guilt and shame too, as some suggest she should be with her “own kind” (!) so that way I could do more for everyone else. He has brought me into this wonderful blogging community, but you all take care of me here! Not sure that counts either. ha! But, I’ll take it and thank Him and be blessed to do whatever I can.
God bless you and thank you for your support and care! 🙂

  21. Wow, Deb! Deep calls unto deep. Hints here of the challenges you likely face in your daily living…challenges that must lack the glamour and gloss that the world is drawn to. Whatever you do for the least of these-your daughter- you do for Jesus. No wonder you are able to write as you do! You are such an encouragement; I hope and pray that God is sending YOU the encouragement you need, too, as you do to so many others. You are a blessed Angel, too! Hugs!!!

  22. You can be a missionary in continuing what you are current doing by spreading the love of Christ, reaching thousands of people around the globe. By embracing the love of Christ and sharing with others is in essences missionary work. And God loves us and showers us with Blessing when we in return are sharing his Word and love to others.
    Thank You for sharing
    Norma1944, Your Sister in Christ!!

  23. Thank you Norma! You are right, we each are missionaries in spreading the love of Christ. You are a huge blessing and just shine with Him. (I can see that in your comments!) God bless you and shine His face upon you today!

  24. Angel A . . .I missed you adding another comment earlier. sorry. But what a blessing to find it. You are one of those who He sends to encourage me! I’m able to write the little I do because . . .I don’t do what all of you do each day! ha! Thank you so much. You make me cry with your kindness and constant support!
